Why are the Asphalt Overlay works being carried out?
Hot mix asphalt surfaces need to be resurfaced every 20-25 years due to the surface becoming brittle as a result of UV light.
Asphalt overlays are better suited to resisting the turning action of heavy vehicles and the shoving action of braking vehicles at roundabouts, industrial roads and court bowls.
Where will the works happen?
Resurfacing with hot mix asphalt are currently carried out in CBD streets, industrial roads, roundabouts, urban court bowls, urban courts without footpaths and urban courts less than 60 metres long.
What will happen?
Stage 1
Issues with kerb, channel and drainage pits are identified and, subsequently replaced.
Stage 2
Failed or failing areas of road pavement identified, and subsequently repaired. This is done by removing the existing pavement and replacing with either asphalt or crushed rock or is stabilised using either lime or cement to treat the pavement.
Stage 3
A layer of the asphalt surface will be removed to approximately 40mm deep and up to 2m wide around the edge of the works area.
This provides a ‘key’ for the asphalt to be locked into place and ensures the finished surface level of the asphalt ties in with the lip of the kerb and channel.
Stage 4
The bituminous spray seal is sprayed on the road by a tanker to form the thin waterproof membrane. It is then covered with a thin layer of aggregate, which is embedded into the bitumen by rolling with a multi wheeled roller to form a skid resistant surface.
Stage 5
The asphalt overlay is laid on the surface by an asphalt paving machine and compacted with a vibrating drum roller.
When will it happen?
Asphalt overlay works will be carried out across the municipality between October and April. These particular works are carried out during warmer weather as they are often carried out at night to limit the impact on businesses, where required.
