About your rates
Rates are a property tax collected by Council to fund the infrastructure and services we enjoy as a community such as roads, footpaths, libraries, parks and gardens, recreation facilities, child care centres and waste disposal.
Victorian Government’s Fair Go Rate Cap system
Latrobe City Council has embraced the Victorian Government’s Fair Go Rates system which took effect on 1 July 2016. The capped rate in the dollar increase for each financial year is determined by the Victorian Minister for Local Government. The municipal charge is also included in the rate cap.
The rate cap applies to the total average rates collected by Council, not to individual rates assessments. In a revaluation year if your rates increase by more than the advertised rate in the dollar increase this is likely because the value of your property increased more than the average property value in the municipality.
