Community Safety

The 2025-29 Council Plan identifies community safety as a priority. Community safety can take many forms including being safe on the roads, feeling safe in public areas like CBDs, safety from harms caused by alcohol, drug and gambling abuse, improving the safety of people experiencing homelessness and safety from family violence. Addressing these issues requires working with partner organisations, and the community.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

Latrobe City Council understands surveillance plays an important role in preventing crime across our municipality. However, these tools form part of a bigger, more comprehensive strategy to reduce crime than surveillance alone.

This strategy can be summarised by Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) that helps our community to be safe when accessing public spaces and doing the things they love.

This diagram explains the principals of CPTED and forms the methodology used by Latrobe City Council to improve community safety.

Latrobe City in partnership with local agencies and stakeholder are working to improve community safety for all members and visitors to our community.

This occurs by increasing liveability and accessibility, collective ownership, understanding the patterns and needs of diverse community members when using public spaces.

Lock up your stuff

When you lock up your stuff you can easily and simply avoid becoming a victim of crime.

Checklist:

Lock all doors and close all windows every time you leave the house.
Secure your keys and other valuables.
Never leave your car running or the keys in your car.
If possible, install anti-theft devices (cameras or alarms) and ensure they are working correctly.

Gambling Harm Awareness Week

In 2023-24, Latrobe City lost $49.6 million to electronic gaming machines alone. Across our adult population, that equates to $829 per person, $254 more than the Victorian average. The significant losses from gambling impact health outcomes, employment, housing and social connections.
We can all help to prevent harmful gambling by spotting the signs, encouraging people to seek help, or to set gambling limits.
Local support services are available through the Gambler’s Help Team at Latrobe Community Health Service available on 1800 242 696.
The Gambler’s Help Line is also available for free support 24/7 on 1800 858 858
If you have an idea about how to reduce gambling harm in Latrobe, the Latrobe City Trust Gaming Support Fund may help to make it happen.

Safety in our community

Support stronger relationships and partnerships between the police and the community
Encourage clubs, community groups and services to provide safe, welcoming and inclusive environments for all
Consider innovative ways to re invigorate empty shop fronts to add brightness and vibrancy to our street scapes
Work with the police and agencies to respond to public perceptions of safety
Work with neighbourhood centres, houses and hubs to build local connections and support school and neighbourhood renewal projects
Work creatively to develop initiatives to prevent those in our community from entering or re-entering the criminal justice system and look at ways to support re-entry into the community
Address pedestrian and transport safety needs – consider pedestrian crossings, bike and walking paths, hoon behaviour, lighting and community prevention activities
