As we know, it is swooping season again and Latrobe City Council is reminding residents to be aware of swooping birds as the Spring nesting season begins across the region. 

Native birds, including magpies, can become protective of their nests and offspring during spring, sometimes swooping people who enter their territory. Swooping can occur in a range of locations, including parks, gardens, walking tracks, school grounds and other public spaces. 

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said a little awareness can help you stay safe while sharing the outdoors with native wildlife. 

“Spring is a wonderful time of year but it’s also when some native birds become protective of their nests and their young,” Cr Gibson said. 

“We encourage you to stay aware when walking, cycling or spending time outdoors and to take simple precautions when in the vicinity of swooping birds.” 

Council encourages you to check for known swooping bird locations using Victoria’s Swooping Bird Map, avoid nesting areas where possible and move calmly and quickly through affected areas if they cannot be avoided.  

Other tips include wearing a hat, carrying an umbrella above your head and travelling in groups where possible.  

Cr Gibson said it was important to, if possible, avoid the area until nesting season has finished, as the birds are only trying to protect their young.
