Latrobe City Council has endorsed its updated Community Amenity Local Law following extensive community consultation.
Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson said this local law helps Council address local issues that affect the look, safety and liveability of our neighbourhoods and public spaces.
“The Community Amenity Local Law helps Council manage a range of everyday issues that contribute to a safe, welcoming and enjoyable municipality, and I would like to thank all those in the community who took the time to provide their feedback,” Cr Gibson said.
“The updated local law provides clearer guidance on common issues, including managing overgrown and unsightly properties, reducing waste contamination, responsible animal management and safe open-air burning.
“We have strengthened provisions relating to abandoned and unregistered vehicles, the storage of caravans and trailers on roads, and the protection of Council land, trees and public spaces.
“There are also now clearer requirements for burn-offs, including notification and safety measures that help reduce risk to surrounding properties and the wider community.
“It also reflects changing community expectations by including vaping devices in smoke-free provisions, improving shopping trolley management and introducing clearer permit processes for activities on Council land.”
The review has modernised the local law, improving clarity and consistency, while introducing new definitions, streamlining permit processes and updating enforcement provisions.
“Many community safety matters remain the responsibility of Victoria Police and Council can’t override state or federal legislation,” Cr Gibson said.
“However, this local law gives Council the tools needed to respond to local amenity concerns, educate residents and work with our community to resolve issues before they escalate.
“The updated local law is about maintaining the standards that help make Latrobe City a great place to live, work and visit.”
