FOGO is here!

Media Release

From Wednesday 1 July 2026, Latrobe City Council’s new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service will start, making it easier for households to recycle food scraps and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

From this date, the lime-green lidded Garden Organics (GO) bin will become the FOGO bin, where food scraps can now be added alongside garden waste and be transformed into nutrient-rich mulch and compost.

To support the transition, Council has provided free FOGO kitchen caddies to help residents collect food scraps at home. These 7-litre caddies are compact enough to fit neatly under the sink or in a cupboard. They are optional, but available to each household.

Residents can collect their caddy from Council Headquarters in Morwell or any Latrobe City library, by presenting the coupon they received from Council in the mail or with a valid ID which contains the home address

The only change for households is that most food scraps now go into the lime-green-lidded FOGO bin instead of the red-lidded general rubbish bin. Bin collection schedules and frequency will remain the same.

This new service will begin from residents’ first scheduled bin collection after 1 July 2026.

By participating in the FOGO service, households will help reduce landfill, cut greenhouse gas emissions and support the creation of high quality compost used to grow more food – a practical, local step toward a more sustainable future.
