Traralgon Agnes Brereton Park Named after Agnes whom was one of the children of Cr George Pentland .

She trained as a nurse at Sale Hospital graduating in 1921. She nursed at the Gippsland Base Hospital (Sale) for several years.

In 1923 Agnes applied for registration of “Ewington” as a private Hospital. This was granted with Agnes being in charge (Matron).

Agnes married Alf Brereton (Grocer) in 1927. They lived in Shakespeare St. next to “Ewington”.

Traralgon Duncan Cameron Memorial ParkNamed in memory of Duncan Cameron a leading citizen in Traralgon. John Duncan Cameron was born at Longwarry in 1909: d. Traralgon 1963, suddenly aged 54. He came to Traralgon in the 1930’s plying his trade as a builder of houses, community buildings – First Scout Hall; Maryvale Motors Garage; Presbyterian Church building at Cumberland Street and Trans Eastern Motel; and bridges including the bridge at Rosedale. Lived at no. 2 Hyde Park Road which he built.

Became a Councillor in 1955. Very active in the Southsiders Progress Association especially fighting for improvement in Air quality from the Cement Works in Janette Street.

Many people attended his funeral who had received help from Duncan without recognition. He contributed to the area as a member of various committees including the Management of “Dalkeith Homes”.

Traralgon Kath Teychenne Centre Named in memory of Kathleen (Kath) Teychenne (Mackay) MBE, 1974. [Member of British Empire].

A local identity whose achievements were many in the community sphere. Instrumental in establishing the Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod in 1956 serving many years on the committee including secretary. A talented musician who played, taught juniors and adults.

She also found time to create the Latrobe and Francis Orchestras.
Born 11/6/1925, in Maffra, to Jack & Florence Mackay. Died 19/1/2010 result of a car accident. Married “Dick” Teychenne, 5 children & 9 grandchildren.

Named after Harold Preston who was the Mayor for the Traralgon Borough in 1962/63.

He continued as a Councillor when Traralgon became a city. He retired in 1971. Throughout his time on Council Harold worked for Sporting facilities for such activities as Little Athletics, Table Tennis and Soccer. Hence the ‘Harold Preston Reserve.

Named after Eric Taylor who was the Secretary for Traralgon Shire 1954 – 1961. He then became the Town Clerk for the Borough of Traralgon which became the City of Traralgon in 1964. He was the first Town Clerk for the city. Serving for a short term.

Eric’s other main community involvement was as a member of the Board of Management of St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Traralgon for a number of years in the 50’s.

He died in Traralgon aged 50, 1969.

In respect of the Tennis courts on the Eric Taylor Reserve. The land was donated in the 1950’s to the Presbyterian Church by the Bell family who lived in “Brooklea” in Meredith St. (off Shakespeare St.)  The courts were built in 1964 being opened for the 1964 season in October 1964. St Andrews at this time had many tennis teams in the Senior & Junior competitions in Traralgon.

“Brooklea” was the home of Dr. Morrison (the town’s first resident Dr. 1885 - 1892). Mr L.M. Bell and his family lived in this house. Dr Morrison was the uncle of Louis Bell). Brooklea was demolished in 1993.

Named after Jack Maskrey who arrived in Traralgon with his parents in 1926 immigrants from England. His father share farmed for Phil Nixon on a farm on the Latrobe River Flats on the road to Glengarry. They were rescued from the roof top of the farmhouse in the 1934 flood.

Jack served as a Councilor for the Shire of Traralgon, the Borough and the City in all 30 years a Councilor.

He was President of the Shire when the Borough was formed in 1961 becoming the Borough’s first Mayor.

Jack retired from Council in the late 60’s only to return in 1982 as a Councilor for Traralgon City.

Jack served on many local community groups including the Progress Associations for Pax Hill and the South Side; RSL; Red Cross and Fish & Game Society as Hon. Secretary to name just a few.

Jack was also employed as a meter reader for SEC.

Named after Kevin Lythgo who came to Traralgon in 1935 as Railway Shunter. Served in WWII returning to open up a Grocery Store. This became the first Self-serve Grocery store (1952) in Traralgon and eventually a supermarket from which he retired in 1982.

Kevin was always interested in Music playing in a local group “the Night Owls”. Upon his retirement a Music Bursary ($600) was established in his honour. The bursary was to encourage a music student to further their music studies.

Kevin, at his retirement dinner, announced he was establishing a Kevin Lythgo Trust Fund of $5000 for the Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod. [has been given as the Lythgo Piano Concerto Award & the Aria winner]

Kevin’s community involvement included – St Michael’s Church, Traralgon Rotary, Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Life member Traralgon Racing Club.
