Big Summer Read

Overview

Kids are encouraged to keep reading over the summer holidays with an incentivised program that uses Beanstack, a mobile app that rewards you for reading. When reading milestones are reached, kids earn ‘badges’ for their Beanstack profile and increase their chances of winning a prize.

Timeline

The program is now open for pre-registration and starts 1 December 2023. Pre-registration is where kids can create their account on Beanstack and sign up to the program. It ends on 31 January 2024. The prize draw will take place on 12 February 2024.

Registration

Children must be over the age of 13 to register for an individual account. Parents can register their children and manage participating family members within their account. Participants can register and log their participation via the Beanstack website or by downloading the Beanstack Tracker app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Books

You can read any book and in any format - physical, eBook or eAudio. Pop into your local branch and browse our shelves or view our digital library on your device. Borrowbox has curated a range of children's titles especially for the Big Summer Read.

The only difficulty will be choosing your titles! Will you read an old favourite, taken an adventure with a new genre, learn something from a non-fiction title or enjoy the artwork and simple stories in a picture book?

Badges

Registration Badge

Participants may also choose to collect activity badges. While we encourage them to do this, they are not a requirement for completion - just a lot of fun! Once the account is set up, participants will be prompted to join the BIG Summer Read challenge. Joining the challenge will unlock the registration badge.

Logging Badges

In order to complete the challenge, participants need to log 10 books. This can be done any time during the challenge until it closes on 31 January.

Activity Badges

Participants may also choose to collect activity badges. While we encourage them to do this, they are not a requirement for completion - just a lot of fun!

Prizes

When participants complete the challenge they are automatically placed in a draw to win. At the conclusion of the program we will draw prize winners from categories based on age:

PRIZES: Book packs donated by James Bennett:

  • Ages 0-4 - board books
  • Ages 5-8 - picture books
  • Ages 8-12 - Junior fiction/graphic novels
  • Ages 12-18 - YA fiction/graphic novels

Winners and their nominated Library Service will be notified via email after 12 February 2024.

Please note that only participants registered through Beanstack will be eligible for the statewide prize draw.

Age range

The campaign is aimed mostly towards primary-school aged children, but is open to anyone from 0-18 years of age! Independent and non-independent readers can log any book they read, that is read to them, or listened to as an audio. We encourage parents and caregivers to continue to read aloud to young people during the summer school holidays and log these books as part of the challenge.

Printed reading log

If you can't access Beanstack, you can collect a printed reading log from any Latrobe City Library branch, or you can download it from this page. Please note that only participants registered through Beanstack will be eligible for the statewide prize draw.
