An Audience with Gerry Connolly
Gerry Connolly has been at it for over forty years, since he wowed his fellow students, staff and friends in a revue at the Queensland Conservatorium one late night last century. He maintains a firm friendship with the piano and occasionally partners with it in performance on grownup stages: Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Port Fairy Music Festival
As an accidental tourist to show biz, Gerry has maintained a presence in Australia and a few other countries: onstage in drama and comedy for the national theatre companies and private producers. From Once in a Lifetime to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and the recent runaway national success of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap.
His own efforts with collaborators have produced a fair smattering of cabaret evenings and bijou productions where he right royally lampooned politicians and other public figures. With producer Gus Murray, writer Nick Coyle and directed by Sean Rennie, The Rise and Disguise of Elizabeth R, allowed Connolly to reflect on life as the ersatz Queen of the Pacific Rim. Poignantly, it opened with a funeral rehearsal. The season proved that audiences and critics were happy and glorious:
Many actors have to grapple with cast-types and feeling stuck with one character, but few are as fortunate as Gerry Connolly to have the wit, talent, and showmanship to carry such a timeless character with such grace.
Where to from here? Just you wait…
