Asbestos and Fibreglass Insulation Disposal

What is asbestos?

There are three main types of asbestos, white, blue and brown. Asbestos was used mainly before 1986 in the production of asbestos cement sheeting and piping. Asbestos was also used in the manufacture of vinyl floor tiles, electrical components, brake linings and disc pads.

Asbestos removal

Removal of  asbestos from around the home on private property is governed by the Nuisance provisions of the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008. Council’s Health Services Team can provide advice about the removal of asbestos from your property.

Asbestos removal from a workplace is governed by the Occupational Health and Safety (Asbestos) 2003 Regulations. Strict handling requirements apply and only EPA licensed removalists have the expertise and equipment to remove asbestos from the workplace

Asbestos in the Home Removal Kit

If you are planning a home renovation involving the removal of asbestos material you should contact us on 1300 367 700. Asbestos removal information sessions are held twice a week, by appointment.

A kit for disposal of small quantities of asbestos can be purchased from the Latrobe City Council service centre in Morwell for $55. A free asbestos awareness and information session is provided with each kit.

Asbestos disposal

The disposal of waste asbestos, whether from a workplace or household, is controlled by Environment Protection Authority (EPA). In addition, EPA controls the transportation of waste asbestos when undertaken by a commercial contractor.

We will accept domestic quantities of asbestos at the Hyland Highway Landfill (by appointment), double wrapped in heavy black builders plastic in 20 kg packages, as per the guidelines. Before you dispose of the asbestos please make your payment at a service centre (Moe, Morwell, Traralgon and Churchill) and bring your receipt to the gatehouse. We cannot accept payment at the gatehouse. Asbestos not correctly wrapped in manageable sized packages (20 kg or less) will not be accepted.

Insulation Disposal

Due to new EPA regulations, the disposal of insulation is now being treated in a similar way to asbestos and must be taken to the Hyland Highway Landfill by appointment only.

Residents wishing to dispose of fibreglass insulation material are first required to pack the material in special large clear plastic bags which can be purchased at any Latrobe City Service Centre for $4.50 per bag. Additional bags can be purchased directly from Hip Pocket Workwear and Safety at 32 Vestan Drive Morwell.

These bags are 1500 mm x 1000 mm and can hold approximately 15-20 insulation batts. The cost of disposal is $31 per cubic metre (6 x 4 trailer, single layer of bags) and must be pre-paid at any service centre.
