Releasing your animal

Your animal must be microchipped and registered to be released from the pound.

Payment

If your animal is microchipped, release fees can be paid by EFTPOS at the pound during pound opening hours or other times by arrangement.

Cash and EFTPOS payments can be made at one of our service centres or libraries before you attend the pound. Payment by cheque will not be accepted.

If your animal is not microchipped, phone 1300 367 700 to arrange a time for your animal to be released. Your animal cannot be released until it has been microchipped.

To apply for the release of your animal

Visit the Animal Pound on Driffield Road, Morwell during pound opening hours, (EFTPOS payments only for pets already microchipped) or visit any service centre or library for cash and EFTPOS payments.

  1. Complete the Application for pound release

  2. Show your identification and the signed, completed form to a customer service officer.

  3. Pay the fee to release your animal
All animals released from the pound must be registered and microchipped
Cats must also be desexed (unless exempt, see Compulsory Desexing)
    If your animal is:

    • not registered, you must pay a registration fee with the release fee
    • not microchipped, you cannot collect your animal from the pound until it has been microchipped
    • not desexed:
      • cat owners must purchase a desexing voucher with the release fee
      • dog owners may purchase a desexing voucher with the release fee

Microchipping will be arranged with Council’s contracted veterinarian after release fees have been paid in full and you will be notified when your animal is ready for collection.

Please note that the fees paid for your release are only release fees for your animal, not an infringement.  After release, you should be aware that there may be infringements issued relating to breaches against the Domestic Animal Act, for example, failure to register and dog at large.

Compulsory desexing

All cats registered for the first time must be desexed, unless exempt (see Compulsory Desexing).

If your animal is not desexed you will be given a ‘Notice to Comply’ to produce proof:

  • your animal has been desexed, from the veterinary service; or
  • to state your animal is exempt from desexing.

This proof must be produced within 28 days of the date of release.
