Adopt a pound animal
The lost animals below may be available for adoption eight days after the impounded date.
Register your interest to adopt an animal or call us on 1300 367 700 for any questions about animal adoptions. Due to the volume of adoption requests received, you will only be contacted if your application is successful.

Impounded Pets
The pound is open for the release of impounded pets from 10am to 12noon on both Friday 27 December and Tuesday 31 December 2019 from Driffield Road, Morwell.
Outside of the advertised open days, we will meet your request for release if there are urgent circumstances.
Non-urgent release requests will be considered. Please call 1300 367 700.
Impounded pets may be viewed on Council’s impound register.
Lost or Stray Animals
If you find a lost or stray animal, please call the emergency after hours number 1300 367 700. Normal pound operating hours will resume Thursday 2 January 2020.

Pound opening hours
The pound is open to the public Monday to Friday:
- 8.30am to 9.30am
- 4pm to 5pm
- or by appointment (excluding weekends or public holidays)
Weekends and public holidays
During closure periods animal management staff attend the pound daily to ensure the impounded animals are fed, comfortable, exercised and clean. If your pet is impounded during a closure period, and your pet requires medical treatment, or there are other urgent circumstances, phone 1300 367 700 at any time to arrange a time to meet with a member of our team at the pound. All other non-urgent release requests will be considered.

Releasing your animal
Your animal must be microchipped and registered to be released from the pound.
Payment
If your animal is microchipped, release fees can be paid by EFTPOS at the pound during pound opening hours or other times by arrangement.
Cash and EFTPOS payments can be made at one of our service centres or libraries before you attend the pound. Payment by cheque will not be accepted.
If your animal is not microchipped, phone 1300 367 700 to arrange a time for your animal to be released. Your animal cannot be released until it has been microchipped.
To apply for the release of your animal
Visit the Animal Pound on Driffield Road, Morwell during pound opening hours, (EFTPOS payments only for pets already microchipped) or visit any service centre or library for cash and EFTPOS payments.

Pay the fee to release your animal
All animals released from the pound must be registered and microchipped
Cats must also be desexed (unless exempt, see Compulsory Desexing)
If your animal is:- not registered, you must pay a registration fee with the release fee
- not microchipped, you cannot collect your animal from the pound until it has been microchipped
- not desexed:
- cat owners must purchase a desexing voucher with the release fee
- dog owners may purchase a desexing voucher with the release fee
Microchipping will be arranged with Council’s contracted veterinarian after release fees have been paid in full and you will be notified when your animal is ready for collection.
Please note that the fees paid for your release are only release fees for your animal, not an infringement. After release, you should be aware that there may be infringements issued relating to breaches against the Domestic Animal Act, for example, failure to register and dog at large.
Compulsory desexing
All cats registered for the first time must be desexed, unless exempt (see Compulsory Desexing).
If your animal is not desexed you will be given a ‘Notice to Comply’ to produce proof:
- your animal has been desexed, from the veterinary service; or
- to state your animal is exempt from desexing.
This proof must be produced within 28 days of the date of release.
