Travelling Treasures - free family event

Latrobe Libraries recently hosted  the State Library's  Travelling Treasures exhibition, which highlighted original items from the State Library''s collection relating to the ill-fated Burke and Wills exhibition from 1860-1861.

Several school groups were entertained during the day, and an appreciative evening audience were entertained by the Travelling Troupe with a short skit on the life, and death, of Ludwig Becker. "scientist / naturalist" on the doomed expedition.

The audiences were able to have a very close look at the items from the Burke and Wills expedition on display as they listened to expert staff describe each one, and the story behind the expedition and the artifacts.

Information about the Burke and Hills expedition and the State Library's significant collection of resources can be found through Dig: the Burke and Wills Research Gateway  or by visiting the State Library.

Items on display at the Travelling Treasures exhibition included

  • a watercolor painting of Pyramid Hill painted by Ludwig Becker
  • a scientific sketch of an Owlet Moth drawn by Ludwig Becker
  • the stones used to grind Nardoo seeds which Burke and Wills ate at their Coopers Creek camp.
  • the last notes of Robert O'Hara Burke written during his final days at Coopers Creek
  • the brass initial plate which was placed on the coffins of Burke and Wills as their remains were returned to Melbourne.
