What is Latrobe Youth Council?

Youth Council is a group of young people working together to improve opportunities for youth and raising awareness of issues that affect them.
Youth Councillors are representative of the diverse range of people that reside in Latrobe City.

What do you do in the program?

As a member of Latrobe City Youth Council you will have the opportunity to meet like minded people on a fortnightly basis to express your view on issues that affect you and your friends. You will be able to bring relevant issues for discussion with Latrobe City Councillors.

You will have the opportunity to participate in:

  • training and other development
  • events, conferences and special functions helping you develop your confidence and leadership skills
  • Sister Cities Australia Conference
  • and much more!

You can nominate for leadership positions including - Youth Mayor, Deputy Youth Mayor or Secretary.

This program encourages you to get involved with your community and make a difference!


How do you get involved?

If you wish to apply, please submit the application form to Latrobe City Council by 30 October 2009. Your application will need to be endorsed by your school, agency or training provider. To participate in the Youth Council you must be aged 15-20 years. Click here for further information.


Aims

The Latrobe City Youth Council aims to:

  • Increase the participation of youth in the community.
  • Develop young peoples’ knowledge of the issues that affect them at a Federal, State and Local Government level.

Objectives

  • Encourage young people to create strategies to improve their opportunities.
  • Offer twelve youth council positions to young people from the Latrobe City municipality.
  • Provide an opportunity for young people to to be in contact with Latrobe City leaders and Council representatives.
  • Provide youth council members with information for schools, communities and their peers.
  • Encourage youth council memebers to represent their peers at youth events and forums.  
  • Provide the oportunity for youth councillors to increase their confidence and further develop their leadership skills.
  • Provide the opportunity for young people in the community to take on advanced leadership roles on Youth Council such as Youth Mayor and Deputy Youth Mayor.
