The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics started in 1981 and has since grown into a global movement. It is a public awareness vehicle and “grass-roots” fundraiser for Special Olympics. Special Olympics has created a global sporting community transforming the lives of people with an intellectual dis-ability.
Known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement personnel and Special Olympics athletes carry the “Flame of Hope” into the Opening Ceremony of local, State, National and World Games. More than 97,000 dedicated law enforce-ment personnel carry the “Flame of Hope” annually. Since it’s inception LETR has raised more than half a billion US dollars to sup-port Special Olympics and there are currently 132 LETR Programs in 40 countries across the world.
People with an intellectual disability are the most mar-ginalized members of our community and only 27% of people with a disability in Victoria participate in sport.
Victoria Police and Special Olympics Australia are touring communities across regional Victoria to promote the importance of inclusion and ac-ceptance for people with an intellectual disability.
