Residential Recycling and Waste Collection

Latrobe City has introduced a kerbside recycling, green waste and garbage collection service for residents that is both environmentally responsible and convenient for residents.

The service comprises:

  • A weekly collection of garbage in a new 120 litre mobile garbage bin with a red lid
  • A fortnightly collection of recyclables in the old 240 litre mobile garbage bin*
  • A fortnightly collection (on the alternate week to the recycling) of garden green waste in a new 240 litre mobile garbage bin with a lime green lid

* When old bins are worn out, they will be replaced by a yellow-lidded recycle bin.

Bins should be placed on the nature strip before 6.00am on the day of collection with the front edge about 50cm from the kerb and wheels facing away from the road.

Garbage

With the new 'three bin system' residents are provided with a new 120 litre bin with a red lid for their general waste. Latrobe City encourages its residents to compost kitchen waste where possible.

The garbage bin is for items that cannot be recycled. These include;

  • Meat scraps
  • Disposable nappies (empty and wrap securely)
  • Plastic bags, Styrofoam packaging, meat trays and cups, film wrap
  • Window glass, mirrors, pyrex glass, light globes, noxious weeds

Items that CANNOT be placed in the garbage bin include recyclables, green waste, hot ashes, oil, paint, syringes, unwrapped dust, chemicals, timber or building materials and automotive batteries.

Please do not over fill your bin as it will cause material to spill onto the street and will not be able to be emptied.  Only material placed in a Council approved bin will be collected.

Recycling

From 1 July 2004, your old 240 litre garbage bin is to be used for recycling only. Your recycling bin will be collected on the same day of the week as your garbage bin on the alternate week to your green waste collection. Recycle all you can to save space in your garbage bin.

All recyclable items are placed LOOSELY inside the recycle bin. Please take care to recycle only the correct items and avoid contamination. Please refer to the brochure and calendar supplied with bins for details. Please Note: Recycling MUST NOT be placed in plastic bags.

The following items are recyclable;

  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles and containers (codes 1 to 7- see underside of container)
  • Steel cans
  • Milk and juice cartons
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Aluminium cans
  • Clean aluminium foil and food trays
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Junk mail
  • Cardboard
  • Scrap paper

Items that are NOT RECYCLABLE include nappies, loose plastic bags, syringes, cat litter, dog droppings, other animal or human waste, batteries, tyres, dead animals, crockery, 'Styrofoam' packaging, containers with food remains, expanded polystyrene cups and trays, waxed cardboard, motor oil containers, light globes, window glass, drinking glasses, metal items (other than those above).

The Materials Recycling Facility operated by DASMA Environmental Solutions is only able to sort small and lightweight packaging items. Items such as scrap metal can be taken to the transfer stations in Moe Morwell, Traralgon and Yinnar.
