Community Safety Month is an annual community event celebrated in Latrobe City since 1996. Since 2002 this has become Community Safety Month and is now celebrated every October.
A key feature of the month is its emphasis on partnership based approaches to safety promotion incorporating activities focused on preventing and reducing injury, violence and crime. A look at the web link below provides not only ideas about activities and resources but also local agencies and community groups who are potential partners in promoting a safer community for us all.
Community Safety month has become a National Event celebrated in most Australian States and in many other countries of the world.
The annual celebration of Safety Promotion had its origins when Latrobe City (then Shire) and the City of Hume co hosted SafeComm 5 in February 1996. This 5th International Conference on Safe Communities marked the accreditation of Latrobe as a designated World Health Organisation 'Safe Community' (see Safe Communities).
