Community Safety Introduction

Utilising a Latrobe Safe Communities Advisory Committee - the unit is responsible for a range of activities associated with promoting safety in the City. The unit undertakes these in partnership with the Community and the many other agencies that have an investment in the safety and wellbeing of our Community.

Responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of effective strategies designed to minimise hazards and conditions, which lead to harm, or fear of harm, for all citizens and visitors.

 

This includes:

  • Accreditation as a World Health Organisation 'Safe Community' (February 1996).
  • A focus on Community Safety Promotion incorporating all injury prevention, safe and secure environments, crime and violence prevention.
  • Collaborates and develops partnerships with the whole community and other agencies to promote prevention.

  • International Power Children's Traffic School
  • SaferGippsland (with the Gippsland Local Government Network & Crime Prevention Victoria)
  • GoodSports (Alcohol Management in Sport)
  • SafeRoads (Road Safety Strategy)
  • PartySafe
  • Community Safety Audits
  • Drug and Alcohol Issues (Latrobe Valley Drug Reference Group)
  • Small Business Safety Promotion
  • Local Alcohol Accord
  • Latrobe Safety Committee (with Victoria Police)
  • Walking School Bus (with VicHealth and Local Primary Schools)
  • Young Driver Road Safety Education (RACV, Vicroads, Police, RoadSafe, Edison Mission, International Power, Loy Yang Power)
  • Annual Event - Community Safety Forum (May)
  • Community Safety Month (October)
  • Latrobe Safety Committee - representation from community groups and agencies - meets bi-monthly
