Septic Tanks

Small areas within the Latrobe City Council do not have reticulated sewer available. For these properties, sewage (toilet water) and sullage (from baths, sinks, showers etc), must be treated and contained within the boundaries of the property.

It is the responsibility of Latrobe City Council's Health Services Team to ensure that all new septic systems are installed in accordance with the Code of Practice- Septic Tanks and Latrobe City Council's Septic Specifications.

Under the Environment Protection Act, property owners are required to obtain a permit to install, alter or use a septic system.

Permit to Install or Alter a Septic System

It is the responsibility of property owners to apply for a permit to install or alter their septic system before works commence. Copies of plans need to be submitted to the Health Services Team for approval prior to any works commencing.

Latrobe City Council's Environmental Health Officers undertake inspections during the installation to ensure the septic system meets the requirements. Upon completion of works and before the property is occupied, a permit to use and an approved septic tank plan will be issued to the applicant.

Please keep the approved plan  in a safe location for future reference. If another septic plan is required at a later date please lodge a Septic Tank Plan Search Request form with the appropriate fee.

Requirements for lodging an application include providing the following information:

  • Completed Septic Tank Permit Application form
  • Appropriate fee according to the application form
  • Soil percolation test/waste water management plan
  • Photocopy of title of property
  • Floor plan and block plan of house
  • Description of the system including proposed location
