Fencing

There are various requirements that apply to the construction of a fence within Latrobe City. In many cases a Building Permit is required, including swimming pool fences. If you are wishing to construct a fence abutting Council property then Council also contributes half cost, within certain requirements.

Building Permits Required:

You will need to obtain a building permit for the construction of:

  • A brick fence higher than 1.2 metres
  • A side or boundary fence more than 2 metres high
  • A fence that is more than 1.0 metre high within 9 metres of the point of intersection of street alignments
  • All swimming pool fences

Building Permits Not Required:

A Building Permit is not needed if you wish to construct one of the following:

  • A side or boundary fence less than 2m high
  • A timber front fence less than 1.5m in height
  • A chain wire tennis court fence

 

Half Cost Fencing

Council contributes half of the cost of construction, replacement or maintenance of a standard fence abutting a Council owned property. View the Half Cost Fencing Policy.

Laneways and Roads

Council does not contribute towards the construction, replacement or maintenance of a fence abutting laneways or roads. For more information see the Half Cost Fencing Policy.
