New Restricted Breed Dog Regulations

Latrobe City's Local Laws team provide a useful online service for residents which helps locate their missing pets, vehicles or livestock. If the team has found your pet, vehicle or livestock they will, with best endeavours, have details posted in the Impound Register. About Registration

  • According to State Laws all cats and dogs aged 3 months and over must be registered. The information provided on this form is subject to Section 18 of the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 and will be used to update the public animals register as prescribed under that Act.
  • As of 1st May 2007, all new applications to register a dog or cat will not be accepted unless the dog or cat has been implanted with a microchip and desexed (proof must be provided). This includes dogs and cats moving into the municipality from another Council.
  • If you are renewing an existing dog or cat registration your dog or cat must be microchipped (proof required) prior to 10th April 2009.
  • Registration fees are due and payable by 10th April annually. If your dog or cat is eligible for a reduced fee (see below "Fees and Information"). Proof of eligibility is required by certificate from the relevant authority.
  • Failure to register may incur a $239 infringement
  • Under the Domestic Animals Act 1994, if the owner is a minor the owner's parent or guardian is responsible for the dog/cat.
  • Proof of sterilisation/microchip and/or Victorian Canine Association/Feline Control Council is required. If unavailable a Statutory Declaration from your veterinarian or applicable association (please refer to Cats and Dog Registration table below) is required.

Impound Dog/Cat

Any dog or cat found wandering at large will be impounded. These may be claimed by contacting the city offices in Traralgon, Morwell or Moe on 1300 367 700. Payment of a release fee will be required and a sustenance fee may be applicable. Unclaimed animals will be disposed of after eight days.


Owners Responsibilities

  • Dogs must not be allowed to wander outside the owners' premises. (A dog not within an area which is securely fenced or is not otherwise securely confined to the premises).
  • Registration tags must be attached to the dog's / cat's collar whilst the dog / cat is outside the premises of it's owner
  • Dogs must be on a leash unless in an 'Off Leash' designated area.
     

State Government Levy

"The State Government Levy of $3.50 for dog registration and $2.00 for cat registration is primarily used to fund responsible pet ownership educational programs."


Privacy Notification 

The personal information requested on this form is being collected by Council for the enforcement and administration of animal control in accordance with Sections 10 & 18 of the Domestic (Feral & Nuisance) Animals Act 1994. The personal information will be used by Council and it's Contractors for that primary purpose or directly related purposes and may be disclosed as required to by law. The applicant may apply to Council for access and/or amendment of the information.
