Rural Access Project

Building an Inclusive Community for People with a disability in Latrobe City. RuralAccess will support rural and regional communities to plan and develop strategies which will increase community membership opportunities for people with a disability.

The Latrobe City RuralAccess project will play a pivotal role in the local community by developing a framework for planning which integrates the perspectives of a range of community stakeholders.

This integrated approach to community planning will help identify needs, priorities and opportunities which will inform the development of a range of projects and initiatives in Latrobe City which will respond to key issues identified by people with disabilities and their families.

RuralAccess will

  • Draw on a broad range of resources to enable people with a disability to be included in the life of the community.
  • Assist the community to include people with a disability and their families by:
    • Helping people and organisations to work together more effectively
    • Improving community understanding about the needs and aspirations of people with disabilities through Community Education and Awareness raising
    • Working with community organisations to develop Policies and practices which are inclusive of people with disabilities
    • Developing and implementing projects which respond to needs and community priorities
  • Include the needs of people with a disability in future community planning.
  • Support service providers to assist people with disability to live the sort of life they choose.
  • Work out easy ways for people to access the information they need about services, community activities and issues.

RuralAccess is funded by the Department of Human Services and is an initiative of the State Government in partnership with Latrobe City. RuralAccess is linked to the Growing Victoria Together strategy.
