Disability Action Plan

Latrobe City has had a Disability Action Plan since 1996 and during that time there have been three reviews of this plan. Since 2001 many council services, information and facilities have successfully become inclusive for the whole community.

Previous Disability Action Plans focused on an overarching systemic approach, however the 2006 to 2007 plan will be taking a different direction. The 2006 - 2007 Disability Action Plan contains strategies directly linked to projects in council's business plans. This will ensure that the needs of people with disability will be included in all aspects of Latrobe City services and infrastructure.

Latrobe City has a strong commitment to ensuring that the infrastructure and services it provides are accessible to all members of the community.

Some guiding principles for the inclusion of people with a disability in the Latrobe City community are:

People with disability have the same fundamental rights as all members of the Latrobe City community;

People with disability have the right to access services within the Latrobe City community which will provide them with opportunities to fulfil their individual potential;

A person with a disability is an individual first and foremost and is not to be defined by their disability;

No two individuals with disability are alike;

The needs of people with disability change across their lifespan;

Interventions and service provision must aim to optimise the benefits for a person with disability;

Service provision must complement a person's own family and community supports;

Changes to the physical and social environment which create access and equity are critical to integration of people with disabilities into the community.
