Find reliable authoritative information using these information databases. Some are provided free to library members by Latrobe City Library and require you to login with your library card number. Others are free through the internet.

Encyclopaedias

Encyclopaedia Britannica

Advanced level content for old students and adults There are links to over 200,000 Internet sites reviewed by Britannica editors as well as over 150 full text journals and magazines. plus up-to-date information on world current events and links to related web sites.  For more information

Newspaper & Journals

InfoTrac OneFile

InfoTrac OneFile provides access to periodical and news information on a diverse set of topics, including humanities, education, business, science, current events, art, politics, economics, social science, law, and general interest topics. It also includes Choice Magazine.

Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre  

This database includes leading Australia/NZ periodicals and international periodicals in full text; full text reference books; as well as newspapers such as The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, The Sunday Age and transcripts from the ABCs leading current affairs TV and radio programs.

Trove Digital  Newspapers.

This free site allows access to historic Australian newspapers digitised as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program. This site now includes searchable access to full text to many newspapers across Australia including Capital dailies, as well as regional and local titles. Gippsland newspapers are well represented and include  the Traralgon Record,  the Morwell Advertiser and the Gippsland Times.

Tip in using Trove : use Advanced Search if you want to limit your search to a specific newspaper title or a range of newspapers - for example a newspaper from a specific town or a particular state.

You can also limit your search to News, Family Notices and Sporting Results.

Online Index to the Argus Newspaper

The Argus was a Melbourne Melbourne Metropolitan daily published between 1846 to 1957. This index is an exciting adjunct to Australian Historical Newspapers which includes full text of the Argus from 1946 to 1954.

THis Victorian Government website provides health and medical information to help individuals and their communities improve their health and wellbeing. It provides fact sheets on common diseases and conditions

Health and Wellness Resource Center  

This database covers the whole health subject area including specific diseases, journal articles;  incorporates health encyclopaedias and dictionaries.

LAW

Law Handbook Online 2011

This handbooks is  the "most comprehensive do-it-yourself guide to the law in Victoria". This website is the online version of the Fitzroy Law handbook, which is also available as a reference book at all libraries.

Australasian Legal Information Institute.

This is an online database of Australian Federal and Sate legisltation and cases.

Biographies

Australian Dictionary of Biography  

Freely available, this is  Australia's pre-eminent dictionary of national biography. Here are over 10,000 scholarly biographies of persons who were significant in Australian history.  Largely covers people who died before 1980.

 

   Australian War Memorial 

Freely available, this database contains information about people who served in Australian forces from the Sudan in 1865 to the recent peace-keeping operations.

 

   National Archives

RecordSearch describes over 6 million records created by 9000 Australian Government agencies, mostly since 1901. It includes defence and immigrartion records.

This database is only available for use in the Libraries. It offers and impressive array of information from across the world. it includes British Census and DBM records, and Australian electoral rolls, cemetery records as well as BDMs..

Family Search.

This is a free family history database available to anyone using the Internet. It includes the International Genealogical Index & Ancestral file, as well as a wealth on information for family historians.
