Local History

Local history is an important part of the services offered by Latrobe City Library.

The Library's local history collection includes books, local newspapers, local history magazines, microfiche, microfilm, CDRoms, pamphlets, maps. Each branch of the Library maintains a reference collection and a loan collection. Find items in the Library's Local History catalogue

The Library aims to provide a comprehensive collection of print material relevant to the history of the area covered by the Latrobe City and bordering districts.

Local Newspapers

Latrobe City Library has extensive holdings of early local newspapers on microfilm, and bound copies of more recent years.

Trove now also includes electronic copies of the Traralgon Record (currently 1886 to 1911) and the Gippsland Times. Use the advanced search option for these newspapers

Other places to find Gippsland and other historic newspapers

The Centre for Gippsland Studies based at Monash University Gippsland holds a significant collection of local and Gippsland newspapers, published prior to 1900. It also holds a full run of the Yallourn newspaper Live Wire which began publication in 1921

The State Library of Victoria holds a fairly comprehensive collection of Victorian local newspapers, including the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland.

Historic Australian Newspapers 1803 - 1954  This database includes full text access to newspapers from all states and territories. It now includes regional newspapers from across Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley, including the Traralgon Record,  the Morwell Advertiser and Sale's Gippsland Times which provides useful coverage of the Latrobe Valley before the first local newspapers were established. Use the Advanced Search option to limit searches to specific newspapers.

Historical Gazettes 1836-1997. This site includes the New South Wales Government Gazette 1836 - 1851; The Port Phillip Government Gazette 1843 - 1851; The  Victorian Government Gazette 1851 - 1997.
