How it started
As part the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games "Getting Involved Program" Latrobe City presented a celebration of local sporting history and heroes. This took the form of a travelling Sporting Hall of fame, allowing the public to view and celebrate the successes of other local community members.
The public were asked to nominated members of the community for the Latrobe City Sporting Hall of Fame, to celebrate our past and present local legends of sport whom have excelled in their chosen sport as an athlete or official. A 'Sporting Hall of Fame' committee has been formed which included a cross section of councillors and the general public and they were responsible for the induction of the first members.
The two categories of the Sporting Hall of Fame are that of Legends and Members. The Legends category is for athletes, who achieved sporting excellence by competing at the highest level whether this was at the Olympic Games or International Competition. Or succeeding at the national level and gaining selection to a national team, or excelling at the highest possible level for their chosen sport.
The member category is designed to recognise the contributions of individuals who may not have actually competed, however their contribution to their chosen sport was still significant. This includes officials and referees, coaches and trainers, sport medicine or sports psychology, administrators and others involved in sport at the elite level.
The inductees had to satisfy a 10 point criteria which would allow them to be induction into the Sporting Hall of Fame.
