Expressions of Interest for Bushfire Memorial Artist
Latrobe City Council has received funding in order to build a memorial to commemorate the Black Saturday fires that affected the Gippsland region in January and February 2009. The memorial will be created in Victory Park in Traralgon and should be designed to enable the local community to reflect on the events that happened during that time, remember those who were lost, enable people to grieve and honour the work of the emergency services.
The work will be designed in consultation with the Bushfire Memorial Steering Group; the families of the bereaved; people in the community who have expressed interest in being involved, and the Community Development Groups in each of the areas impacted.
Latrobe City Council is seeking tenders from Artists interested in working with the community to create such a work. To download a copy of the Expression of Interest Artists Brief, please click on the link below:

Natural Values Recovery
Natural values recovery is the protection of the natural environment following a bushfire. It refers to the actions taken to protect native plants, animals and ecosystems following a bushfire as part of fire recovery. In October 2009, the Victorian and Commonwealth government announced funding for natural values recovery projects as part of the 'Rebuilding Together' - Statewide Recovery Plan. For information on these projects and natural values recovery in general, visit the DSE Natural Values Recovery page.
Monitoring Air Quality in Bushfire affected areas
-
Why carry out air monitoring for asbestos? We are responding to community concerns about air quality, particularly asbestos, in areas affected by the 9 February 2009 bushfires.
-
Who is doing the work? The EPA and the Department of Human Services are working together to monitor air quality in the affected areas.
-
What areas are being monitored? General community areas such as town halls, schools and the ‘main street’ in bushfire affected areas are being monitored. Not all locations can be monitored. The aim is to monitor areas with the most bushfire affected properties. Click here to read more
