Latrobe City Council has been successful in securing a Victorian Regional Alibaba E-Commerce Workshop for Gippsland.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan paid tribute to Alibaba Australian Managing Director Maggie Zhou and State Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade, Philip Dalidakis for their support.

“Clearly opening up a dialogue with the world’s largest online and mobile commerce company is an interesting move for a regional city, but we have an economy in transition and now is the time to be bold and adventurous,” Cr O’Callaghan said.

“We were very fortunate and most humbled when Maggie Zhou and her team agreed to meet with Latrobe City.
“At the meeting, Ms Zhou and her team discussed opportunities for building international trade capability within the region and we were delighted when the discussions led to the idea of a Regional Alibaba E-Commerce Workshop.

“Ms Zhou and her senior leadership team were very passionate about Alibaba’s potential role as a conduit for Gippsland businesses to access the significant Chinese consumer market.

“Minister Dalidakis has been a regular visitor to our municipality and his encouragement in commencing this dialogue was invaluable.”

Cr O’Callaghan said while discussions and planning were in the early stages, the Alibaba E-Commerce Workshop would be held in December 2017.
“We will be working with all Gippsland Council’s to ensure that they and their local businesses, small and large, will have an opportunity to participate in the workshop and to gain an understanding of how they can be ready for Alibaba and the Chinese consumer market,” Cr O’Callaghan said.
