Intern Program delivering results

Posted on 13 February 2018

University students will again experience the workplace by participating in an internship program at Latrobe City Council.

In partnership with Federation University Australia, Latrobe City Council is supporting seven Industry Placement Program students from various disciplines during Semester One this year.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said the program provided students with invaluable work experience.

“The Industry Placement Program enables students to put the theory they’ve learnt in the lecture theatre to practice and gain work skills. The program creates a local talent pipeline for host organisations and enables students to remain local whilst completing their course.

“As a host organisation, Latrobe City Council is pleased to see the progress of the students as they spend time in their teams and get to know the work environment. Our most recent intake has seen students working across graphic design, social media, performance and innovation, human resources and community development. They have proven themselves to be knowledgeable, adaptable, skilled and keen to learn,” Cr White said.

Federation University Australia’s Industry Placement Program Co-ordinator, Joanne Matthews, said students completed a project during their placement to provide them exposure to process and procedures and networking.

“Interns gain confidence, skills and are empowered to share their thoughts and opinions as a member of their placement team.  Many students are retained by their host organisations post placement and offered employment,” Ms Matthews said.

“Federation University Australia is thankful for the support we receive from our host organisations in providing this opportunity to our students. Our students gain valuable experience which attributes to their employment readiness and tertiary experience.”
