Latrobe City’s future prosperity looks brighter today with strong signals coming from the Morrison Government that their view of brown coal aligns with that of Council.

Our vast brown coal resource is an obvious precursor for reliable, low cost power and this announcement today indicates that the Federal Government agrees that coal has a future in Victoria.

Our vision is to have the stored energy in our brown coal harnessed to make our country’s manufacturing sector and other energy-intensive industries competitive on the world stage.

Our Strength Led Transition Plan reflects our community’s desire for the utilisation of brown coal to continue into the future.

We are also calling for the establishment of a Coal Royalties Fund so that our community experiences direct benefit from the wealth that is created from the use of the coal in our backyard. Currently those funds are channelled into the generic coffers of the State.

In Australia we enjoy high wages and excellent standards of workplace health and safety but those things come at a financial cost compared to that of our competitors. Cheap, reliable power underpins strong, stable employment—which is what we want for our community, our state and our nation.  The Latrobe Valley can power those outcomes.

We welcome this significant investment in advancing technologies for low emissions power generation.
