For the first time in Australia, the exhibition Bound by Time brings together the major works by Sydney-based artist Denis Beaubois, which will cover the complete ground floor of the newly refurbished Latrobe Regional Gallery.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said being the first gallery to host such a major display of works from an artist of such renown was a real coup for the Latrobe Regional Gallery.

“This is an internationally exhibited artist and it is fitting that this show is one of the first exhibitions to be held in our newly-renovated space,” Cr O’Callaghan said.

Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Dr Mark Themann, said this seminal solo exhibition represented the most wide ranging public presentation to date, by this internationally active artist.

“Underpinning the exhibition is the Currency project, which looks at the charged relationship society has with money. From the precarious nature of state-sponsored art funding, to validation of artistic merit from the art market, the artist borrows from the worlds of economics, capitalism and conceptual art. Currency combines photo, video and documentary material using a variety of media.

“Other projects include No longer adrift and Composite territories. These reference the theme of migration and displacement. Exploration of these complex matters takes place through the use of commonplace materials and everyday actions by the artist, friends and his family, in sometimes absurd and innocent public performances,” Dr Themann said.

“Denis Beaubois’ practice is idea-driven rather than tied to a specific medium or material. His past work has addressed various themes including that of migration & displacement, surveillance, and economics.”

Denis Beaubois’ projects have been presented internationally at The Tate Modern, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and a range of international and Australian galleries.

He has received numerous awards for his works most notably winning the 1998 Bonn Videonale (Germany), and receiving the Judges special prize for the Internationaler Medien Kunst Preis 2001, ZKM (Germany).

Bound by Time by Denis Beaubois will be presented at the Latrobe Regional Gallery from 15 July to 17 September 2017 in Gallery 1 and 2.
