Council responds to Target closure announcement

Latrobe City Council has responded to the announcement that Target Mid Valley would close.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said “yesterday we heard the sad news that Target will soon close and leave the Mid Valley Shopping Centre.  Upon hearing this, our first thoughts are of course with the workers who rely upon this store for regular and reliable work.

“In a time of economic transition, this news will be difficult for our community to hear,
 Cr White said.

“The presence of operations such as Target, provide regional communities with much more than the goods they sell.  They provide a broad offering of employment opportunities, from first jobs for teenagers through to dependable yet flexible family-friendly work arrangements that help parents feed, clothe and house their children.

“When institutions such as Target leave town it leaves a gap and reinforces for us all the importance of buying local and supporting local traders.”

Cr White added that Council contacted the State Government to seek assurances that support will be provided to those who are entering a phase of decision making about their future prospects and opportunities.

“In the interim Council has sought meetings with the owners and management of the Mid Valley Shopping Centre to understand the broader context and background to Target’s decision to close,” Cr White concluded.
