Latrobe City prides itself on being a culturally and linguistically diverse municipality with a broad range residents whose country of birth was outside Australia and who speak a variety of languages other than English. Cultural information on Latrobe City residents is made available through the Census conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics every five years.

COUNTRY OF BIRTH

Over 85% of Latrobe City residents were born in Australia. For those born elsewhere, the most common backgrounds are the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany. There is also a relatively high proportion of residents who were born in Malta.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN

The majority of Latrobe City residents only speak English at home (93%), however, there are quite a number of Italian, Greek, Maltese and Dutch speaking persons in the municipality. Other languages spoken by Latrobe City residents include German, Polish and Tagalog (Filipino).
